UVA at ACCelerate Festival

Earlier this month OpenGrounds organized and facilitated UVA's contribution to the ACCelerate Creativity and Innovation Festival 2017, copresented by Virginia Tech and the Smithsonian Institution, at the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington D.C. The festival, programmed by Virginia Tech’s Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology and the Museum’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, was a three-day celebration of creative exploration and research at the nexus of science, engineering, arts, and design (SEAD). Visitors to the festival interacted with innovators and experienced new interdisciplinary technologies developed to address global challenges.

The ACCelerate festival was an opportunity for all ACC schools in partnership with the Lemelson Center to showcase their work to the public, each other, students, alumni, companies, legislators, and invited guests from the nation’s capital. There were 48 interactive installations from across the 15 ACC schools grouped in six thematic areas: Civic Engagement, Art & Technology, Sustainability & Environment, Biomimetics, Health & Body, and Making & Advanced Manufacturing. In addition, visitors experienced performances and panel discussions featuring Smithsonian and ACC students, scholars and staff exploring key questions about creativity and innovation.

UVA's portion of the festival included four research projects and one performance (listed in order of their appearance in the below photos):

  • The Yamuna River Project by Inaki Alday & Pankaj Vir Gupta
