Opportunities

Open Hours

Open Hours allow you to use The Corner Studio without booking in advance or being constrained by a specific meeting focus--you can simply drop in and work, study, or meet. This open-endedness allows for new, exciting interactions between students, faculty, and others who wish to share in an experience of ingenuity and boundlessness. Interactive technologies and inviting spaces are available at your disposal, providing a platform for students, faculty, staff, and the community to collaborate and uncover new creative paths. We ask that you check our events calendar in advance, as scheduled programs may be taking place that will decrease the amount of space available for drop-in work.

Open Tables

Open Tables at the Corner Studio provide a space for faculty, professionals, visiting speakers, and students to share their expertise and with a diverse group of participants. Lasting 1-2 hours, these discussions are open to the UVA and Charlottesville community and stimulate interdisciplinary conversation beyond the university classroom. We are always looking for new hosts and partners. J-Term Course

OpenGrounds regularly partners with corporate and community partners to offer curricula during UVA's January Term, called J-Term

In partnership with WillowTree Apps, OpenGrounds sponsored a J-Term Course in January 2017, AI Design Challenge: The Rise of Bots

Course Code: SARC 5500

Instructor: William Sherman

As new technologies based in artificial intelligence transform the capabilities of websites and apps on the internet, there is an opportunity to imagine and design unprecedented forms of interaction.  This course is sponsored and led by OpenGrounds and Willowtree Apps to gather students from across the university to explore the potential of bots and related AI-based emerging technologies to transform user experience. It will involve faculty from several schools, designers and experts from Willowtree and their industry partners to engage in an immersive dive. The readings, workshops and design sessions will lead to speculative team proposals for the future of artificial intelligence in daily life. Course admission will be by application to ensure the participation of students from a diverse range of disciplines.

Students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.
